Dr. Hart is a nationally recognized patient advocate who is involved in organized medicine at every level repeatedly breaking barriers and mentoring medical trainees. She was the first chairperson of the American Medical Association’s (AMA) Minority Affairs Section Governing Council, overseeing its transition from a Consortium to a Section. She was the first Black woman elected and re-elected to the Minnesota Medical Association’s Board of Trustees.
Dr. Hart holds local, state, and national positions in organized medicine. Dr. Hart serves as AMA’s representative to the National Committee on Correctional Health Care and an APA delegate to the AMA House of Delegates. She is President of the Minnesota Association of African American Physicians, Region 4 chairperson of the National Medical Association.
In February 2024, Dr. Hart was elected to the American Psychiatric Association’s Board of Trustees. In July 2024, she was appointed by the Minnesota legislative to a review panel. She is the Chair of Jeremiah Program, Rochester Campus’s Community Board of Directors. Jeremiah Program is a non-profit organization providing necessary support for single mothers in pursuit of economic mobility.
In 2014, she was named Minnesota Psychiatrist of the Year. In 2017, Dr. Hart received the National Alliance on Mental Illness Exemplary Psychiatrist Award. In 2020, Minnesota Physician journal named her one of the 100 most influential health care leaders in Minnesota.In 2023, she received the APA Assembly’s Profile of Courage Award. In 2024, Dr. Hart received the 2024 APA Assembly Ronald A. Shellow Award given to departing members of the Assembly who have served far beyond the general standards of service.
