Robert Hurley has a BA in History from the College of the Holy Cross and a MA in Political Science from American University. After spending three years in Army Intelligence at the Pentagon, he started his publishing career in 1970 as an education representative first at Prentice Hall and then at John Wiley. In 1977, when John Wiley started a medical division, he joined it as an Acquisition Editor becoming Executive Editor three year later. In 1982, he accepted a position as an Executive Editor at Churchill Livingstone, becoming Vice President, Editorial Director of the US office three year later. Subsequent to that, he moved to C V Mosby in Philadelphia as Executive Editor and ended his career at Wolters Kluwer as Executive Editor. During his career, he published numerous medical textbooks and reference books. The books he is most proud of publishing include, Hematology: Basic Principles and Practice by Hoffman, Benz et al which is now in its 7th Edition, Textbook of Biochemistry with Clinical Correlations by Devlin which is also in its 7th Edition, and more recently Operative Techniques in Orthopedic Surgery by Wiesel, a four volume comprehensive reference book on techniques with over 800 contributors – talk about herding cats. Since he retired, he has worked as a consultant in medial publishing and as volunteer at a non-profit in Camden, NJ, mentoring youth who have dropped out of high school.
